Chapter Thirty-one

PreviousTopNext

Sid went looking for a witness among the crowd—or even better, the arsonist, here to make sure of his handiwork.

She was initially hit with a wall of mental white noise, the thoughts of all the highly trained professionals going about their jobs. Expecting this, she let herself drift among the consciousnesses of firemen and cops and EMTs. She discovered relief along with puzzlement that there didn't seem to be anyone to rescue, inside. Where are the patients and staff? she wondered along with the mortals.

As soon as mortal thoughts became the ambient background, she became aware of the vampire. The energy from one of her own kind was a bolt of lightning, a sizzle shot across a blank sky. Sid ignored her natural impulse to contact this other bright awareness. Who was it? What was it doing here? What did it know? She needed a gentle subtle touch here. She began to investigate.

Or she would have, if heavy footsteps hadn't come clumping up to stop beside her. Sid looked up, a long way up, to the sweaty face of a hulking young fireman who was looking worriedly down at her.

Sid groaned at the interruption and rose to her feet.

"May I be of assistance, my lady?" the young Prime asked.

She put a hand on her forehead. "Kiril, isn't it?" she asked.

He grinned at her like a slightly feral puppy. He was one of her own Clan. She hadn't seen him since he'd moved to Los Angeles to become a fireman.

She sighed, but she didn't suspect him of the atrocity blazing behind him. "Kiril Wolfgang."

He put his hand on her elbow, as if she needed support. "I'll get you out of here."

"Ahem," Joe said from behind the shelter of a tree. "The lady is already taken care of."

He stepped out in all his naked magnificence.

At least he looked magnificent to Sid; she didn't care what the young Prime's attitude was. Except that he didn't look impressed.

"A werewolf bodyguard is hardly enough protection during such a dangerous time," Kiril told her.

She knew that Joe had meant that she could take care of herself, but she let the Prime's assumptions go.

"What do you mean, such a dangerous time?" she demanded. "I know about the attack on the clinic." She gestured toward the fire. "This has something to do with us."

The young Prime nodded his agreement. "I think I felt something supernatural hanging around the perimeter," he said. "Then I spotted you and came for a look."

"There's more than two vampires in the vicinity," Joe said. "At least there were."

"Can you pick up a trail?" Sid asked.

"I want to hear what else our friend has to say," he answered. "There's a lot going on."

Kiril nodded. "The bar downtown took a hit earlier, made to look like a drive-by. A car bomb went off outside Shaggy Harker's bike shop. A supposed stalker tried to attack the movie star who's really a Prime."

"Werefolk as well as vampires are being targeted?" Sid asked. Shaggy was alpha of the local werewolf pack.
